Fatty liver: common, silent and often reversible

Fatty liver is common and often unnoticed; learn what may help.

Fatty liver, now often called MASLD, is liver fat not caused by heavy drinking. It affects many Indian adults, including some not overweight.

Why it matters

Fatty liver is often symptomless and linked to insulin resistance, diabetes and heart disease. It can progress to scarring and appear on ultrasound or as raised ALT.

Reducing liver fat

Studies link 7 to 10% weight loss with lower liver fat. Reduce sugary drinks, juice, sweets and fried snacks.

Regular movement helps independently of weight loss. Aim for brisk walking most days and strength training twice a week.

Tracking progress

Your doctor may repeat ALT, AST, GGT, ultrasound or FibroScan. Published case studies reported normalised liver enzymes in four to six months.

When to see a doctor promptly

Seek medical review for jaundice, dark urine, abdominal or leg swelling, or liver enzymes above three times the upper limit.

Education, not personal medical advice. Consult a qualified clinician about diagnosis, treatment and your results.
