A lipid profile usually reports total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides and sometimes VLDL and ratios. Each says something different.
LDL
LDL contributes to arterial plaque. Ask your doctor for a target based on diabetes, smoking, blood pressure and family history.
Triglycerides and HDL
In Indian adults, insulin resistance often accompanies triglycerides ≥150 mg/dL and HDL under 40 (men) or 50 (women).
Triglycerides respond quickly to food: fewer refined carbs, sugary drinks and alcohol often bring them down within weeks.
Fasting or not?
Non-fasting samples may be accepted, but meals can raise triglycerides. Follow lab instructions and compare like with like.
When medication comes in
Lifestyle changes help, but very high LDL, heart disease or diabetes may require medication. Decide with your doctor.
