Millets: worth the hype?

Benefits and limits of millets.

Millets are traditional Indian grains rich in fibre and minerals, and need less water to grow.

What millets do well

Ragi provides calcium; bajra and jowar provide iron and fibre. Whole millets have more fibre than white rice.

What they do not do

Millets are mostly carbohydrate; large portions can raise glucose. Processed millet cookies or noodles may be as refined as wheat versions.

How to use them

Try jowar or bajra in atta, or ragi dosa or porridge with nuts. Watch portions; pair with dal, sabzi and protein.

If you have thyroid disease or kidney disease, ask your doctor whether any specific millets or quantities need care.
